A man who was threatening suicide in the busy parking lot of the new King Soopers at Claremont Ranch on Wednesday was arrested after a brief standoff with El Paso County sheriff's deputies.

The standoff started with a "check the welfare" call at 12:15 p.m. but quickly escalated when the man barricaded himself in a black Jeep with "multiple firearms" inside, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jacqueline Kirby said. The county's tactical units were called in for extra security because the man was parked near the back of the busy shopping center at Marksheffel Road and Constitution Avenue, she said.

He was arrested less than an hour later related to a sexual assault charge in Fountain, Kirby said. Charges stemming from the standoff are pending.

The man has not been identified.

"Our efforts were successful today," Kirby said of crisis negotiation tactics used to talk the man out without violence. "It's the best outcome we can hope for."

The larger-format King Soopers Marketplace was opened in early August in the unincorporated Claremont Ranch area on Colorado Springs' eastern edge.
